Which runs are there in Austria?
Around 1,600 official running events are held in Austria every year. In addition to some well-known city marathons, the number of mountain runs and trails has increased in recent years, which are especially trendy in the western provinces due to the mass of beautiful mountains.
Internationally, the Vienna City Marathon has established itself as probably the best known running event in Austria. Every year, around 40,000 athletes take part in Austria's largest running event, with around 7,000 runners competing over the full marathon distance. Other well-known marathons are held in Linz, Graz, Salzburg and in the Wachau region. All of these events also offer starting opportunities over shorter distances, which usually have even more participants. The half-marathon races are particularly well attended.
Austria - land of impressive lake and mountain races
Road races in communities and smaller towns have a long tradition in Austria. Almost every community now hosts a running event. Also associated with Austrian running are the scenic runs around famous lakes. And as is well known, the Alpine Republic as a popular vacation paradise has many of them. Among the most beautiful and popular of these runs are the Wolfgangseelauf or the Achenseelauf.
At least as impressive are the mountain runs and trails in Austria. "Mass with class" is the motto in Austria. Because the range of running events in the mountains is large. Mountain runs and trails are held regularly in almost every province. It is difficult to highlight a few here. But there is a long tradition of the Tour de Tirol - a three-day event where, in addition to a road race, a mountain marathon and a trail have to be mastered. For some years now, trails have established themselves directly near major cities: These include the Salzburg Trailrunning Festival, the Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival and the mozart 100 in Salzburg.
