Around 60 triathlons, duathlons and aquathlons are held in Switzerland. A triathlon consists of three sports: swimming, cycling and running. Duathlons involve only cycling and running, while aquathlons involve swimming and running.
Duathlons are regularly held in the winter, as swimming outdoors is not possible, or only with difficulty. Aquathlons have the advantage that no bike has to be used, so no technical equipment is necessary.
What triathlons are there in Switzerland?
The most famous triathlon event in Switzerland is the Ironman Switzerland. The long-distance triathlon requires swimming 3.8 km, cycling 180.2 km and running 42.2 km. Until 2019, Zurich with Lake Zurich and the Landiwiese was the venue for this event. Since 2021, the IRONMAN is held in Thun in the canton of Bern. Part of the course is, among other things, Lake Thun.
Another event of the IRONMAN series is held in St. Gallen and is called Ironman 70.3 Switzerland Rapperswil-Jona. At Ironman 70.3, the distance is half as long as at a long-distance triathlon. As with the Ironman in Zurich, the rush is great. More than 2,000 athletes try their hand at Ironman 70.3, and not much fewer at the Walliseller Triathlon (Zurich) and the Locarno Triathlon (Ticino).
A triathlon of a completely different kind, however, is the Inferno Triathlon in Mürren (Bern). At this event, participants gain many thousands of meters of altitude in the middle of the Alps. Quite strenuous, but in return with an impressive backdrop. The XTerra Switzerland is also strenuous. At the cross triathlon in Le Sentier (Vaud), 500 athletes swap their road bike for a mountain bike. Boredom is guaranteed to be nonexistent at this event.
