Almost 100 half marathons are held in Austria every year. Most half marathons are held on flat courses in cities or towns. However, there are also one or two half marathons along trails or in the mountains.
A half marathon, with a length of 21.1 km (or officially 21.0975 km), is exactly half as long as the marathon, which has a length of 42.195 km. Due to the shorter distance, a half marathon is quite manageable even for many hobby runners after only a few months of training. Therefore, there are about five times as many half marathon events as marathon events in Austria. Most of the marathon runners also use half marathons to prepare for a marathon.
What half marathons are there in Austria?
Almost all larger cities hold a half marathon at least once a year. Many smaller communities also regularly offer races over the 21.1 km. Half marathons along lakes or on or along mountains enjoy particularly great interest in Austria.
In the winter months, races over the 21.1 km are offered exclusively in the eastern region of Austria. The VCM Winter Running Series and the LCC Polar Bear Running Series each feature three half marathons in the Prater Hauptalle (Vienna) from January to March.
Well-known spring half marathons are run as part of the Vienna City Marathon and the Linz Marathon. The Graz Half Marathon attracts several thousand runners to the Styrian capital. In Upper Austria, the Wels Half Marathon provides the first major spring highlight. In the west of the country, the TirolMilch Spring Run in Innsbruck and Bludenz läuft will attract large numbers of participants.
Half marathon at lofty heights
If, in addition to the 21.1 km, a few meters of altitude are also required, then one or the other offer is available in the summer. For example the glacier marathon Pitztal-Imst or the Ganghofer Trail.
Absolute highlights in autumn are the Wörthersee Half Marathon, which takes place as part of the Kärnten Läuft weekend and leads around the beautiful Wörthersee. International world-class runners have been guests at this half marathon, which starts in Velden, time and again in recent years. Fast winning times in combination with fantastic panoramic views are also offered to runners at the half marathon as part of the WACHAUmarathon. In the west, the Innsbruck Night Run or the Jedermannlauf offer a sporty way to end the season.
