Ultrarunning in Austria: An overview of Ultra Runs, Ultra Marathons and Ultra Trails in Austria.
The dates for all Ultra Races in Austria, including registration, course, schedule, results and more details.
More than 70 ultra runs are held in Austria every year. What exactly is an ultra run? Quite simply, any running competition that goes beyond the marathon distance is an ultra run.
A marathon competition has a course length of 42.195 km. This means that if a race is even longer, it is an ultra race. Whether the run is 50 km long or 100 km long makes no difference. Typical competition distances in ultra running are the 100 km run, as well as a 12-hour run and a 24-hour run.
Training and nutrition in ultra running
The training of an ultra runner is not quite comparable to that of a marathon runner. An ultra runner usually completes a lot of runs over long distances. It can happen that during training the marathon distance is exceeded, which is not the case with a typical marathon runner. Also important in ultrarunning is the diet, which is especially in competitions carbohydrate-heavy. Unlike a marathon, ultrarunners also pause during a race (especially a 24-hour race) for longer food breaks or even short "power naps."
What are ultratrails?
In Austria there are some traditional ultrarunning events that have been held in communities for many years and are mostly run as circuits on asphalt. Responsible for the rapidly increasing number of ultraruns are the many trail races that are becoming more and more common in Austria. These regularly lead over a distance that also exceeds the marathon distance. These runs are also often referred to as ultratrails. Thus, there are two categories of ultraruns: Ordinary ultras in the lowlands or on roads and ultratrails that are carried out in the mountains.
Which ultra runs are there in Austria?
The most famous ultraruns in Austria on the road are also part of the Austrian Ultrarunning Cup. Popular ultra runs are held in Lassee, Vienna and Steyr. The latter usually forms the conclusion of the Ultralauf Cup.
For some years now, however, a completely different event has provided the starting signal for the ultrarunning season: namely the 24h Burgenland Extreme Ultrarun, in which participants can cross the whole of Burgenland on a 120 km route within 24 hours. The majority of the route leads around the famous Lake Neusiedl. Walking or biking is also allowed in this competition, in which there are no official rankings. Towards the end of the year, on the other hand, "Wien rund uma dum" has established itself. A 130 km or 64 km long ultra run on the outskirts of Vienna, which is intended to show the beautiful sides of the federal capital.
The longest ultra run in Austria is the "Race Across Burgenland".
The most beautiful ultratrails in Austria
Away from the flatlands, ultratrails are really in vogue. The offer is now huge.
At the Höchkönigman, for example, distances of up to 85 km have to be mastered, including almost 6,000 meters of altitude gain in front of impressive Alpine scenery. The courses take the runners to the highest grassy mountains in Europe, at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. There is also running on difficult ridges - pure thrills.
In summer, one classic follows the other. In 2016, the Traunsee Bergmarathon was voted Austria's most beautiful run by users on HDsports. The supreme discipline leads over about 70 km with 4,500 meters of altitude. The goal: to climb all the peaks around the Traunsee. Not without danger, but also an incredibly impressive adventure that should not be missed. Also on the running calendar for several years is the Großglockner Ultra Trail with a course length of 110 km and 6,500 meters of elevation gain. The trail leads around the largest mountain in Austria. The event has already attracted over 1,000 athletes.
