The biggest marathons in Germany

Undisputedly, the Berlin Marathon is the largest marathon event in Germany. With nearly 40,000 marathon runners each year, the marathon in the German capital is not only by far the largest marathon in Germany, but also one of the largest running events in the world. What's more, the course is perfect for best times. After all, numerous marathon world records have already been set in Berlin. The race takes place in the fall and is part of the World Marathon Majors, which is made up of the biggest marathon events in the world.

Behind the Berlin Marathon, there are two other marathons in Germany that reach a field of over 10,000 runners. These are the Hamburg Marathon (spring) and the Frankfurt Marathon (fall). Other large and well-known city marathons are held in Munich (Munich Marathon), Cologne (Cologne Marathon) and Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf Marathon). The number of marathon participants in most running events has decreased in recent years. The main reason for this is the ever-increasing range of fringe events offered by the events. For example, almost every marathon now includes a half marathon or a relay race. Another reason for the declining number of participants could be the increasingly diverse range of running events. Mountain and trail races, as well as multi-day stage races, are on the upswing.

Beautiful landscape marathon

The only landscape marathon with starter numbers far above 1,000 participants is the GutsMuths Rennsteiglauf with around 3,000 finishers over the 42.195 km - a beautiful and also really challenging landscape run that has been taking place in Thuringia for almost 50 years. Scenically beautiful we may also certainly call the Black Forest Marathon - one of the oldest marathons ever in Germany. Runners also enjoy a beautiful panorama at the Röntgenlauf in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Bestzeit Marathon in Munich, on the other hand, stands out in a somewhat different way, starting at midnight at the end of October. And that is exactly when the time is set back by one hour during the night of the run, i.e. from daylight saving time to winter time.
