More than 100 trail races will be held in Germany. A trail run is held along or on mountains or in hilly terrain. A mountain run, on the other hand, is run from the valley to the summit or a very high point of a mountain.
Trail runs always take place along trails. For longer trail runs, runners must carry prescribed equipment and food. This is to ensure the safety of runners along the trail. Logically, most of the well-known trails are held in the south of the country.
Trail running in Germany: these are the most famous trail runs
One of the most famous trail running series is the Transalpine Run - a seven-day trail running event that starts in Germany and then continues south through Austria and Italy. In this way, a total of over 250 km and 16,000 meters of altitude have to be covered. The special thing about it is that it is run exclusively in pairs.
Also popular in Bavaria is the Wiesenttal Trail, which is 22 km long with 1,000 meters of elevation gain. Also in Bavaria is the Altmühltrail. The 27 km course leads around Dollnstein along rugged rock formations. Further west, the Trailmarathon-Heidelberg (Baden-Württemberg) is causing a sensation. More than 1,600 participants take to the starting line at this trail event. In the king's discipline - the marathon, around 1,500 meters of altitude are included.
The Urban Trail Series aims to prove that trail running is now also possible in cities, where trail running is now even offered as a competition discipline in cities such as Berlin. The series was first held in 2017.
