Every year, more than 500 running events with a half marathon competition take place in Germany. In our overview you will find the dates of all events including many details, facts, pictures and videos.
The half marathon is not the "supreme discipline of running", but due to its distance of 21.097 km compared to the marathon, it is now run much more frequently by athletes. This is not only due to the incredibly high number of half marathon events in Germany and also worldwide, but also because of the distance. The 21.1 km are not only manageable for ambitious athletes, but also for many hobby athletes. And usually only a few months of training are enough to successfully complete this good 20 km. In addition, almost every marathon runner completes one or the other half marathon competition in preparation for the marathon - as a form test, so to speak.
Where do the biggest half marathons in Germany take place?
Almost all half marathons with participant numbers well over 1,000 take place in the major cities of Germany. The only exception is the GutsMuths Rennsteiglauf, where over 6,000 athletes compete in the half marathon distance.
As with the marathon, Berlin is the undisputed No. 1. 40,000 athletes complete the full marathon at the Berlin Marathon in the fall, while in the spring there are around 25,000 participants in the Berlin Half Marathon over the half marathon distance of 21.1 km.
Besides Berlin, there is currently only one half marathon in Germany with more than 10,000 finishers, the Cologne Marathon. The half marathon of Cologne takes place within the framework of the Cologne Marathon. However, the half marathon field in Cologne is more than twice the size of the marathon, where about 5,000 participate. Among the top 8 half marathon events, there are even six events that are held as part of a marathon. Only the Berlin Half Marathon and the Hamburg Half Marathon are independent sporting events. This means that almost every major German marathon event also has a half marathon competition.
Beautiful half marathons in Germany
Away from the big city marathons, however, there are also terrific insider tips for nature lovers. For example, the Tegernsee Run, which is not an "insider tip" with over 3,000 half marathon starters, but has been very popular with runners for years due to the beautiful scenery along Lake Tegernsee. At least as beautiful is the half marathon Altötting, which already enjoys decades of tradition and is held every year in late summer. People also enjoy running the half marathon at the Seenland Marathon or the Pfälzerwald Marathon.
