The "Athens Marathon - The Authentic" was allowed to make a comeback on November 14 after the break last year.
It is one of the most beautiful and historically impressive marathons on the planet. The course went from the village of Athens, past burial mounds to the Panathinaiko Stadium of Athens.
Challenging marathon course
The running weekend opened on Saturday with a 10-kilometer road race, before the starting signal was given for the 5-kilometer race on Sunday at 8:00 am. One hour later, the big highlight was the start of the marathon race in the historic town of "Marathon". The athletes had up to 7 hours for this demanding course.
Times under 2:15 hours possible
The elite runners often need less than 2:15 hours at the Athens Marathon. In 2014, Kenyan Felix Kipchirchir Kandie was even close to the first time under 2:10 hours in Athens with 2:10:37 hours. In the previous edition two years ago, Kenyan John Kopen Kipkorir ran to victory in 2:16:34 hours and local hero Eleftheria Petroulaki in 2:45:50 hours. At that time, 16,439 male and female runners successfully finished the marathon distance. Including the fringe events, the event even has more than 30,000 athletes.
Greek home victories
Without international top runners it was not quite enough for high class times this year. However, Konstantinos Gkelaouzos impressed in the men's race. The Greek ran a fantastic time of 2:16:49 hours and took more than five minutes off the runner-up Panagiotis Mpourikas. The decision was even clearer in the women's race, where Gloria-Tziovan Privilegio had a lead of more than six minutes over her first pursuer after 2:41:30 hours.
