Trail Running in Switzerland: An overview of Trail Runs & Ultra Trails in Switzerland.
The dates for all Trailruns, Trails and Ultra Marathons in Switzerland, including registration, course, schedule, results and more details.
Trail running is "in" - especially in Switzerland with its infinitely beautiful alpine landscape. There are now over 30 trail runs with attractive and beautiful routes in Switzerland.
In contrast to mountain running, trails usually do not lead directly towards the summit of a mountain, but along a mountain or over many mountain ranges. Since trail runs are also often very, very long, many events have very strict regulations that require participants to bring a minimum amount of equipment and food.
Which trail races are there in Switzerland?
Almost all trail runs in Switzerland take place within a short window of time from late May to early October. During the remaining months, safe trail running in the mountains is not guaranteed due to the conditions.
What trail events are there in Switzerland now? Very popular is the Swiss Irontrail. This multi-day event features more than ten different trail runs, including an ultra trail of more than 100 km, as well as shorter trails for beginners. The race takes place in Davos (Graubünden). Really attractive is also the Glacier 3000 Run. A trail and mountain run that leads from car-free Gstaad initially through flat terrain. But after a few leisurely kilometers, the run takes you over forest and meadow trails into the high alpine terrain on ice and snow. Variety is guaranteed on the 42 km or 26 km course.
Tradition & New
Since 2017, the Montreux Trail Festival has been held in the west of the country. Here, too, there are various starting options from 165 km to 15 km. The "MXtrem160" leads through the Vaud Alps. After the finish, as a reward, you can relax in Lake Geneva. A 60 km and 30 km trail also provides a breathtaking mountain panorama for a not so long distance. At the premier, more than 2,000 trail runners were at the start. The Eiger Ultra Trail, on the other hand, has a great tradition, with the main competition covering 101 km and almost 7,000 meters in altitude.
In Pontresina (Grisons), mountain lovers have taken the "Bernina Ultraks" event firmly to their hearts. It's no wonder, since the only four-thousand-meter peak in the Eastern Alps, Piz Bernina, is in view on this fantastic trail. Running can only be fun - even with a length of over 46 km.
