In Italy there are not only numerous big city marathons, but also many landscape runs, such as trails, mountain runs and lake runs.

The biggest running events in Italy
You want to run a marathon in Italy? Then you are really spoiled for choice. Because the choice here is enormous. These are the most famous city marathons in Italy:
- Maratona di Roma (Rome Marathon) in April in the Lazio region.
- Milano City Marathon (Milan Marathon) in April in the region of Lombardy
- Venice Marathon (Venice Marathon) in October in the Veneto region
- Firenze Marathon (Florence Marathon) in November in the region of Tuscany
- Verona Marathon in November in the Veneto region
- Pisa Marathon in December in the region of Tuscany
This is a selection of famous and great city marathons in Italy. In the Italian capital, Rome, marathon is run every spring since 1982. More than 10,000 complete the marathon distance at the Rome Marathon.
The fastest marathon course in Italy, on the other hand, is in Milan. Times under 2:05 hours have even been run here. Towards the end of the year you can chase your personal best marathon time at the Firenze Marathon in Florence. The Venice Marathon is also held in the fall. About 6,000 runners successfully complete the 42.195 kilometers. When it rains, it can happen that you are standing in water up to your knees. But the athletes have fun in any case.
Running in the Dolomites
One of the most popular vacation regions in Italy outside the big cities is undoubtedly the Dolomites in the north. In the Dolomites you can not only climb attractive mountains, but also participate in several beautiful running events. A prime example of this is the Bressanone Dolomites Marathon. Here we are talking about the first mountain marathon in Italy. From the start to the top of the mountain, in addition to 42.2 kilometers, you have to overcome almost 2,500 meters of altitude. About 700 athletes treat themselves to this beautiful nature marathon every year.
Other well-known trail and mountain races in this region include the South Tyrol Three Peaks Alpine Run, the Stelvio Marathon, the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace and the Reschenseelauf (Grio Lago di Resa). The South Tyrol Three Peaks Alpine Run is a mountain run where you reach the finish at the foot of the Three Peaks after 17.5 kilometers.
Further west in Italy, the Lago Maggiore International Trail is another running event with a magnificent race course.
Fast half marathons in Italy
We still have two running tips in Italy over the half marathon distance for you. On the one hand the Roma-Ostia half marathon. This race is one of the most famous marathons in the world. The event calls itself "the most important half marathon in italy". Around 15,000 compete in this half marathon. There is also a lot going on in spring at the "Trieste Marathon - Trieste Running Festival". The main event is the half marathon over 21.1 kilometers.
By the way, if you want to participate in a running event in Italy, you have to present a medical certificate. Otherwise a start is not possible.
