Almost 1,000 days have passed since the last Barcelona Marathon.
On November 7, 2021, the Zurich Marató de Barcelona celebrated its long-awaited comeback after a break of more than two and a half years or 973 days.
Now in November instead of March
Normally, marathons are run in Barcelona in March. This year, the event has been moved to November. Even if the course is not quite suitable for great world-class times, with around 20,000 marathon runners each year, Barcelona is one of the most sought-after marathons in the world.
Run past the Camp Nou
Among other things, the course led through the center of Barcelona, and the athletes also got to see the Camp Nou. The last race on March 10, 2019, remained in great memory, because at that time two new course records were achieved.
Course records again?
In the men's race, the Ethiopian Alemu Bekele, who now runs for Bahrain, managed the first time under 2:07 hours in the Catalan metropolis with 2:06:04 hours two years ago. In the women's race, Kuftu Tahir achieved the first women's time under 2:25 hours at the Barcelona Marathon with 2:24:44 hours. Of course, hopes were high for similar great times this year as well.
After seconds thriller to the record
New records were set in both the women's and men's races. The men's race promised suspense until the last meter. The 35-year-old Kenyan Samuel Kosgei finished in 2:06:03, one second under the two-year-old record set by Alemu Bekele. In a high class race, the top 6 all ran times under 2:07 hours.
Young Ethiopian woman storms to record
In the women's race, Tadu Teshome provided an Ethiopian victory. The 20-year-old ran 2:23:53 in her marathon debut. This makes her the first runner in Barcelona with a time under 2:24 hours. Meseret Gola (2:24:09 hours) and Meserete Belete (2:24 hours) also stayed under the old record.
