It's time for Rock 'n' Roll!

Well over 30,000 runners were part of the Rock 'n' Roll Madrid Maratón 2021 today. The marathon has been held in the Spanish capital for over 40 years now. Since the last staging on April 27, 2019, it now took almost two and a half years until the next starting signal in Spain's metropolis.

The route at the Madrid Marathon

More than 15,000 alone usually run the marathon distance in Madrid, although there were slightly fewer this year due to the Covid 19 measures. There were other starters in the half marathon race and the 10-kilometer race. The attractive but slightly challenging course passed many of the city's landmarks. The marathon started at the Fuente de Cibeles. Afterwards, the runners went to Paseo de Recoletos, Puerto del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Palacio Real, among others, before reaching the finish line at Retiro Park.

Course records only run at the last staging

The 10-kilometer race started at 8 a.m., before the marathon runners and half-marathon runners were also sent into the race a short time later. Two years ago Reuben Kerio (Kenya) with 2:08:18 hours and Shasho Insermu (Ethiopia) with 2:26:24 hours provided two course records.

The winners 2021

In the men's race, Ethiopian Abdela Godona Gemeda won with a time of 2:10:14 hours. Two other athletes also managed a performance under 2:11 hours. The fastest lady was Kasu Bitew Lemeneh, also a runner from Ethiopia. She stayed just under the 2:30 hour mark with a time of 2:29:08.
