A trip to South Korea is worthwhile not only to get to know the culture and the cities of the country, but also for sports activities.

By far the largest city in South Korea is Seoul, which is home to around ten million people, about one fifth of the population. Other cities with over two million people are Busan, Incheon and Daegu.

South Korea's major cities also host the country's biggest running events.

The biggest running events in South Korea

The most famous races in Korea are the Seoul International Marathon and the Daegu International Marathon. Both marathons are normally held in the first half of the year. Internationally, the races have roughly similar significance. However, the marathon in Seoul has a much longer tradition and was first organized in 1931. However, it was first run over the classic marathon distance in 1964, and women have been allowed to run since 1982. Around 15,000 male and female runners register for the marathon. The course leads through the center of the city. The runners reach the finish line in the Olympic Stadium after a good 42 kilometers. The fastest marathon runners achieve times of around 2:05 hours here, or 2:20 hours for the women.

The marathon field in Daegu is similarly fast, with start and finish in the Daegu Stadium. Marathon running in Daegu has only taken place since 2007, after a half marathon was held from 2001 to 2006. The event is hosted by the National Athletics Association.

In the fall, the Chuncheon Marathon and the Gyeongju International Marathon are among the biggest running events in South Korea.

Triathlons in Korea

Well-known triathlon dates in South Korea include IRONMAN 70.3 Goseong Korea and IRONMAN Gurye Korea. The IRONMAN 70.3 is held in Jeju-do in the first half of the year, the IRONMAN in autumn.
