Belgium has a lot to offer for all classes of runners. There are big marathon events here as well as fun events, trails, ultra runs and even attractive triathlons.
The biggest running events in Belgium
The most internationally known event in Belgium is the Brussels Marathon. Since 2014, a major marathon has been held in the Belgian capital. The course passes many famous sights through the city center. Hotsports are for example the Royal Palace and the Palace of the Nation. The finish line is on the Grand-Place. The course is profiled with about 200 meters of altitude and is only suitable for best times to a limited extent. Therefore, it is not surprising that international top times are excluded. Around 2,000 starters take part in the marathon, but there are even more in the half marathon, which takes place at the same time.
10 miles in Antwerp
Looking at the number of participants, Antwerp hosts the largest running event in the country. The Antwerp 10 Miles Run an absolute classic that has been part of the sports program since 1980. The highlight of the event is the 10-mile run (16.09 kilometers) with nearly 30,000 starters. It is one of the largest 10-mile races in the world. While the Brussels Marathon is held in the fall, Antwerp is already in the spring.
Trail running in Belgium? Yes, it exists!
Even though Belgium's highest elevation, Botrange, is just 694 meters above sea level, there are some trails. For example, the Ecotrail series makes an annual stop in Brussels. The Ecotrail de Bruxelles invites more than 1,000 trail runners to run at the beginning of September. The longest competition is over 80 kilometers long. A marathon trail is also part of the event.
Run and drink!
Another cult event in Belgium is the Beer Lovers' Marathon in Liège. At this marathon, the focus is not on athletic ambition, but rather on the enjoyment of beer. That's because at the Beer Lovers' Marathon, beer is available for tasting at the refreshment stations along the route. The idea has been very well received, as more than 1,000 starters prove.
