Large running events are held in the parliamentary monarchy with its ten million inhabitants.
Highlights of Sweden include the old town of Stockholm, the Northern Lights, the national parks in Abisko and Kiruna, the archipelago, the Göta Canal and the Kullaberg.
The biggest running events in Sweden
The hotsports for runners in Sweden are the two largest cities, Stockholm and Gothenburg. The Swedish capital Stockholm, home to over two million people, hosts Scandinavia's largest marathon at the end of May or beginning of June. This is because almost 15,000 athletes register for the Stockholm Marathon every year. Although the course is not among the fastest, it is a tourist highlight. After all, the marathon even passes the Royal Palace. The Norwegian running legend Grete Waitz, who unfortunately died much too early, won the marathon in 1988 in 2:28:24 hours. To this day, this course record has not been broken among women.
The biggest half marathon in the world is in Gothenburg
Stockholm will also host the Stockholm Half Marathon in September, a major half marathon event with around 10,000 starters. But the biggest half marathon in Sweden is the GöteborgsVarvet. More than 40,000 athletes register for this spring race, which means that the Gothenburg Half Marathon has even been the world's biggest half marathon of the year several times. The flat course is also really fast. In Gothenburg, the best runners covered the 21.1 kilometers in under an hour. There are no excuses here if a personal best time is not achieved.
Other exceptional events
Triathletes will get their money's worth in the summer at the middle-distance triathlon IRONMAN 70.3 Jönköping and the long-distance triathlon IRONMAN Kalmar. Ultra runners should not miss "The Ice Ultra". The Tjejmilen in Stockholm, on the other hand, is one of the biggest women's races in Europe.
