Der IRONMAN 70.3 in Barcelona wurde an diesem Wochenende von einem Todesfall überschattet.
Wie die Veranstalter heute Abend via soziale Medien mitteilten, verstarb ein Athlet wenige Stunden nach dem Wettbewerb.
Der Athlet benötigte medizinischen Hilfe beim Schwimmwettbewerb. Daraufhin wurde er in ein Krankenhaus gebracht, wo er wenig später verstarb:

It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of a race participant at IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona. The athlete required medical attention during the swim portion of today’s race and was transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated. Our condolences go out to the athlete’s family and friends, whom we will continue to support. We are working with the local authorities to gather all the details on how this incident occurred and will continue to do everything possible to provide a safe environment for our athletes. In respect of the family’s privacy, we will have no further comment at this time.
Das Rennen in Barcelona gewannen der Belgier Bart Aernouts und die Britin Fenella Langridge (zum Rennbericht). In Summe nahmen rund 2.500 Triathleten an dem Triathlon teil. In diesem Frühjahr gab es bereits auffällig viele Todesfälle bei Sportveranstaltungen:
