Back in spring

The Rome Marathon returned to its original spring date in 2022. After the marathon in the Italian capital was moved to September for a one-off event last year, this year saw a return to its usual spring staging.

First spring marathon since 2019

Shortly before nine in the morning, the starting gun was fired for thousands of runners in Rome. After the event was canceled in 2020 and held in 2021 only in the fall, it was the first spring marathon in Rome since 2019. At that time, three years ago, Kebede Megertu Alemu from Ethiopia incidentally managed a new course record in the women's race with 2:22:52 hours. In the men's race, on the other hand, the course record of Benjamin Kolum Kiptoo (Kenya) with 2:07:17 hours has now held for 13 years.

Beautiful course through Rome

The course at the Rome Marathon (officially: "Run Rome The Marathon") led past the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter's Basilica, among others. The Colosseum was also part of the marathon route.

Stars from Africa

The defending champion from last year was the Kenyan Clement Kiprono Langat, who finished in 2:08:23 hours, just over one minute over the course record. Last year, Peris Jerono Lagat (2:29:29 hours), a runner from Kenya, also won the women's race. Also this year there were some strong athletes from Kenya at the start.

Especially in the men's elite field was focused on the course record. Among others, Othmane El Goumri was signed up for this. The Moroccan ran in the top 10 at the 2021 Olympic Marathon and completed two other marathons in under 2:06 hours. Fike Bekele competed for Ethiopia. He won the Frankfurt Marathon in 2019. Kenya's candidate for a top spot was Ernest Ngeno, third in Paris in 2018. In the women's race, Ethiopia's Zinash Mekonnen was the top favorite.

Tefera surprises with course record

In the men's race, three runners remained under the old course record. However, it was the Ethiopian Fikre Bekele Tefera. After his surprise victory at the Frankfurt Marathon 2019, it was already the second rather unexpected triumph for him. With 2:06:48 hours, Tefera is now the first and only runner with a time under 2:07 hours in Rome.

His compatriot Tadesse Mamo Temechachu and the top favorite Othamane El Goumri (Morocco) also stayed under the old course record with 2:07:04 hours and 2:07:16 hours. In total, nine runners ran under 2:10 hours, all from Africa.

Sechale Dalasa Adugna won the women's race with a time of 2:26:09 hours. Of the 11,000 participants announced by the organizer, however, less than 6,000 were at the start in the end.
