The LIVE-Results and official rankings from the Lisbon Half Marathon.
The result lists from Lisbon Half Marathon on May 8, 2022. On this page you can also find the rankings from previous years (2021).
The half marathon of world records
Because on November 21, 2021, at the last edition of the Lisbon Half Marathon to date, Jacob Kiplimo conjured up the fastest half marathon time in the world with 57:31 minutes. Also, the previously held course record of Zersenay Tadese (58:23 minutes) was for many years also the half marathon world record. Accordingly, Lisbon is one of the fastest, if not the fastest, half marathon course in the world.
For 2022, a world record bonus of 50,000 euros has been declared by the organizer.
Women's record time unmatched for two decades
While a record time was not run in the men's race until last year, in the women's race, elite runners have narrowly failed several times in recent years to break the course record, which is now more than 20 years old. For Susan Chepkemei ran an impressive 65:44 minutes in Lisbon in 2001. A time that has never been achieved again in the Portuguese capital. Last year's winner, Tsehay Gemechu Beyan, missed the record by just 22 seconds with a time of 66:06 minutes.
More than 10,000 participants in Lisbon
On May 8, 2022, the next attempt was to be made to erase the age-old course record in the women's race and possibly to set a new world record in the men's race. In total, more than 10,000 runners were at the start of the Lisbon Half Marathon 2022.
Marathon world record holder at the start
The women's race was geared towards setting a course record. Among others, the reigning marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei was entered. Kosgei also wanted to attack the "half marathon world record in an all-women's race". To do so, she needed to better the time of 1:05:16 that Peres Jepchirchir ran at the 2020 World Half Marathon Championships.
Other co-favorites to win were defending champion Tsehay Gemechu (Ethiopia) and Berlin Marathon winner Gotytom Gebreselassie.
In the men's race, a total of eleven athletes with best times under one hour were at the start.
Weather became a spoiler
Too hot temperatures prevented outstanding times this year. However, one runner did make the headlines. The 23-year-old Ethiopian Tsehay Gemechu beat marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei in an exciting race. After 1:06:44 hours, Gemechu finally had a two-second lead over Kosgei. Gemechu thus successfully defended her title.
High-class times were completely absent in the men's race. Not a single athlete achieved a time under the hour mark. Kenyan Kenneth Kiprop Renju ran to victory in 60:13 minutes. For Kiprop it was the second major half marathon victory within five weeks. At the beginning of April, he won the Prague Half Marathon in 59:28 minutes. In addition, he already ran a world-class time in February as third at the RAK half marathon with 58:35 minutes. So his victory came as little surprise.
