The Berlin Half Marathon is back at its usual date in early April.

After the cancellation in 2020 and the postponement to August 2021, the Berlin Half Marathon could be held in the spring again in 2022.

Increase in the field of participants

In 2019, the event came to a record field of 28,460 finishers, and in 2021, despite the measures taken at the time, there were still almost half as many with 13,288 finishers. On April 3, 2022, it should again be slightly more compared to the previous year.

One of the fastest half marathons in the world

Germany's largest half marathon race also attracts numerous world-class runners from abroad every year. Although major half marathon races with international professionals were held this weekend in Barcelona and Prague, among other places, the top finishers at the Berlin half marathon were also well worth seeing. After all, Berlin is not only one of the biggest half marathons in the world, but also one of the fastest. Just last year, half marathon runner-up Joyciline Jepkosgei achieved a world-class time with a new course record of 1:05:16 hours.

Top favorite this year was Sheila Chepkirui Kiprotich. The 31-year-old runner from Kenya finished 3rd in Ras Al Khaimah this year with 1:04:36 hours and thus also had the potential to break the course record in Berlin. For Germany, Katharina Steinruck was hoping for a half marathon time under 70 minutes.

Time under 59 minutes the goal

In the men's race, the course record is even under 59 minutes, run by Erick Kiptanui (Kenya) with 58:42 minutes in 2018. Hardly slower was there last year Felix Kipkoech with 58:57 minutes. So the objective was clear this year as well. Not only a time under an hour should it be, but ideally again a performance under 59 minutes.

Among others, Abel Kipchumba could be signed up for this, who has completed at least one half marathon race in under 60 minutes every year since 2018 and even stayed under 59 minutes twice last year. Among them, in his victory in Valencia, where he ran an outstanding time of 58:07 minutes.

In addition, many eyes were on Amanal Petros, who wanted to be the first German ever to cover the half marathon distance in under an hour.

The starting signal for the half marathon race was given shortly after 10 a.m. on the Straße des 17. Juni near the Brandenburg Gate.

3rd course record in a row

Sheila Chepkirui Kiprotich lived up to her role as favorite. The Kenyan won the race in a superior manner after 1:05:02 hours and led a quadruple victory of Kenya. She also improved the course record by 14 seconds, even though she missed her personal best by a good half minute. It was the third women's course record in a row at the Berlin Half Marathon.

Steinruck with time under 70 minutes

Katharina Steinruck also had great reason to celebrate. The German finished in sixth place with a time of 1:09:38 hours, her first half marathon time under 1:10 hours. Just missing out on the top 10, however, was Laura Hottenrott, who finished 11th in 1:11:14 hours.

Kenya's Festival

In the men's race there was also a quadruple victory for Kenya. However, the course record was missed. With 58:55 minutes Alex Kibet ran nevertheless an outstanding time. Kibet was almost a minute ahead of runner-up Joshua Belet. Third place went to top favorite Abel Kipchumba, who still stayed under an hour.

Petros disappointed, Motschmann surprised

The half marathon did not go as planned for Amanal Petros. He wanted to be the first German ever to complete the half marathon distance in under 60 minutes. In the end, he was not even the best German at the Berlin half marathon. Because with 1:02:21 hours Petros finished only 15th. The up-and-coming Johannes Motschmann, on the other hand, made it into the top 10 in tenth place with a personal best of 1:01:45 hours.
