Spain's marathon classic was held on an unusual date this year.

Normally, the Marató de Barcelona takes place in March. But after the event could only be held in November last year, it was scheduled in May for 2022.

Only a six-month break

So there was a difference of six months since the last Barcelona Marathon. Despite the short break, however, interest in the marathon in Catalonia was very high. With around 20,000 marathon runners, the event is one of the largest marathon events in Europe anyway.

Course records improved several times recently

The somewhat demanding course showed almost all the sights, but makes absolute world-class times hardly possible. Last year, however, both the winner and the runner-up managed to set a new course record. At that time Samuel Kosgei reached the finish line after 2:06:03 hours. The runner from Kenya was thus exactly one second faster than Alemu Bekele, who ran 2:06:04 hours two years earlier. In the women's race, the course record set in 2019 by Ethiopia's Kuftu Tahir did not last long either. Her compatriot Tadu Teshome lowered the time of 2:24:44 hours to 2:23:53 hours last year.

This year, too, there were some strong runners from Africa at the start of the Barcelona Marathon. So the conditions for another improvement of the course records were given. The starting signal was given at 08:30 in the morning.

The favorites

Among others, the two-time world champion Abel Kirui was at the start. Also titleholder Samuel Kiplimo Kosgei could be engaged again. Ethiopian Tadelech Alemu also had a chance of winning. In the women's race, the two-time winner of the Amsterdam Marathon, Tadelech Bekele was the favorite.

Records again

Also in 2022 the course records were improved at the Barcelona Marathon. In the women's race Meseret Dekebo surprised. The Ethiopian was able to improve her marathon best time of 2:27:36 hours, set only the previous year, to 2:23:11 hours. The 29-year-old also managed to improve the course record by 42 seconds. Strong times were also run by Ayantu Kumela (2:25:00 hours) and Zenebu Fikadu (2:25:11 hours).

There was also a surprise winner from Ethiopia in the men's race. The previously little known Yihuniligne Adane provided the first time under 2:06 hours in Barcelona with 2:05:53 hours. He improved the city record by ten seconds. Also under the old record was his 22-year-old compatriot Gebru Redahgne, who finished five seconds behind Adane. In total, twelve athletes stayed under 2:09 hours.
